Finding Periodical Articles (Using Databases)

NYU Libraries subscribes to hundreds of databases for searching full-text newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals articles. This class highlights the advantages of searching using these subscription-based databases over Google and other Web search engines. You’ll also learn tips for choosing databases relevant to your research topic, techniques for searching effectively within databases, and guidelines for critically evaluating the information you find. (75 min.)

RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based tool, free to members of the NYU community, that helps manage and organize your research. As you search catalogs and databases, you can import references directly into your own bibliography file then automatically format footnotes, endnotes, and works cited using standard styles (MLA, APA, etc.) (60 min.)

Advanced RefWorks

Learn how to use RefWorks features such as RefShare (facilitates data sharing and collaboration) and the built-in RSS feed reader. (60 min.)

Intro to Endnote

Similar to RefWorks, EndNote is a tool for organizing your research. It allows you to import catalog and database references directly into your own personal bibliographies and automatically format works cited, footnotes and endnotes in standard styles (MLA, APA, etc.) (60 min.)

Google Expert

Learn when and how to use advanced features in Google, Google Books and Google Scholar to find books, get full text journal articles, and create bibliographies. (60 min.)

Citation Indexes

The Web of Science (Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Social Science Citation Index) provides access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,700 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world. It also provides a unique search method, "cited reference searching." Navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans. Users can also navigate to electronic full-text journal articles subscribed by NYU. (45 min.)

E-Book Collections

Discover the full-text book collections -- multidisciplinary, reference, subject-focused (history, literature, science, technology) -- that NYU Libraries offers. Also, learn about ebrary, an e-book collection with special features like highlighting and notetaking, storing page markers, and saving to the virtual bookshelf. (45 min.)

Finding Images (Photos, Illustrations, Works of Art)

Find out about the image databases NYU Libraries offers, such as Accunet/AP Photo Archive, ARTstor, and Camio. Also, learn how to find images using web search engines and discover strategies for finding illustrations in books and periodicals.Meets in the conference room in the Reference Center on the 1st floor.
