The Index of Christian Art was founded in 1917, to record every significant detail about every example of art dated to before 700 A.D. for which an illustration could be obtained. Now includes works up to 1400 A.D. It is the one of the largest and most important archives of medieval art anywhere in the world. Index contains more than 150 searchable categories of information, including artist's name, title of work, medium and provenance, bibliographic citations, and individual scholarship by the Index staff. Future plans for the computerization of the Index include electronic access to the Photographic Files.
