Dictionaries

  • Real Academia Española. Diccionario de la lengua española. 21st ed. Madrid: Espasa Calpe, c.1995. 1,513 pp.
    Bobst Ref1 PC4624.A16 1995 CD-ROM (and guide)
The Spanish Academy dictionary is much more comprehensive than earlier editions were. The "Preámbulo" notes the improved etymologies, due to the use of Corominas' studies, and the addition of many technical and scientific terms. Earlier editions generally contained only the vocabulary of leading authors, thus precluding scientific and technical terms, slang, and colloquial expressions. The newer editions of the dictionary also have more americanismos.

  • Corominas, Joan and José A. Pascual. Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico. 6 vols. Biblioteca Románica Hispánica, Diccionarios 7. Madrid: Gredos, 1980-91.
    Bobst REF1 PC4580.C59 1980 v.1-6

    Bobst REF1 PC4822.S3 1988 v.1-3
The fullest general dictionary of its kind. Gives the word's meaning and often its etymology as well as the area in which it is used. Provides the scientific name for fauna and flora.

    Bobst REF1 PQ6006.D54 1993 v.1-2
This work of many experts not only provides data about Spanish and Spanish American authors but also contains articles on literary genres and other types of material. "Este Diccionario pretende ofrecer un panorama completo de las diversas manifestaciones literarias en lengua castellana. Tal delimitación linguística justifica la importancia concedida a autores y obras de literaturas sefardí, filipina o chicana, habitual e injustamente ausente en este tipo de compilaciones, y a la vez explica la ausencia de los escritores que han usado exclusivamente las otras lenguas peninsulares..."(1-ix).
