Its greatest value is that it includes basic primary source literature, as well as secondary reference sources. Books and articles. Entries are not annotated. Appendices include history of Arabic studies in Europe and the Middle East. Roman, Arabic and Hebrew script indexes.

      First edition (1913-1936) is complete. The second edition, begun in 1954, is in progress. Although editions share many common topics, articles do not duplicate themselves. Supplements containing topics omitted from earlier volumes are issued regularly, as are the author and subject indexes. Articles are in English by leading scholars. "Islam" implies Islamic culture at its most broad - biography, history, geography, language and literature as well as Islamic doctrine, movements, etc. Uses Arabic terminology in transliterated Arabic.The Encyclopedia of Islam, New edition: Glossary and Index of Technical Terms, compiled by J. van Lent and PJ Bearman (Bobst Ref1 BP40.E52 1997) guides those unfamiliar with the terminology. The major resource of the field.

Vols. 1 and 2 of the supplemental volumes are additions and corrections to the basic vols.1-2 (using the same arrangement and referring to the citations in the earlier volumes). Vol 3. of the supplement is the index to all other volumes. Most libraries, including Bobst, have the 2nd edition of the base volumes 1-2; there are two sets of page numbering in that edition - the original pagination which appears in the margins, and the 2nd edition pagination. Page references in the indexes refer to the numbers in the margin.

Detailed maps cover physical and historical geography, economics, social conditions, religion, natural resources, etc. Much explanatory information on maps.
