Locker and Study Carrel Rental Policies

Lockers

There are lockers throughout Bobst Library which may be rented by matriculated NYU students, NYU faculty, and NYU staff.

Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are rented at the Library Privileges office on the first floor. Renters may choose their locker (subject to availability). Lockers are available at several locations on most stacks floors. There are four tiers of lockers in each location; those at floor level and at the top level (about 5 feet above the floor) are usually rented last. It is unusual for all of the lockers in the building to be rented, though the most desirable usually go quickly.

Terms & Fees

Rentals are made on a semester basis. Once a locker has been rented, it may be renewed indefinitely (one academic year at a time) as long as the renter continues to be a valid NYU matriculating student, faculty, or staff borrower at Bobst Library. Rental fees are as follows:

Regulations

  1. The rental fee is non-refundable.
  2. Only personal materials and checked-out library materials may be kept in the locker. Non-circulating and uncharged library materials are not to be stored in the locker at any time.
  3. No food or beverages may be stored in the locker.
  4. No hazardous materials may be stored in the locker.
  5. The Library is not responsible for any items kept in the locker. Do not store valuable property such as laptops, iPods, etc., in the locker.
  6. Inspections of book lockers are conducted regularly by Library staff, who are authorized by the renter to remove materials which violate the locker regulations (i.e., non-circulating, uncharged, overdue, hazardous, or consumable/food items).
    • Overdue materials will be returned to the Circulation Department and the fine for the period overdue will be entered in your library record.
    • Uncharged and non-circulating materials will be removed from the locker. A fine of $5.00 per item will be charged to your library record.
    • If violations are found on two inspection tours, locker use privileges will be permanently revoked.
  7. You may not change lockers unless there is something physically wrong with the locker you have been assigned.

Study Carrels

Study carrels are small locked study rooms located on floors 4-10 in Bobst Library. They may be rented by PhD students with approved dissertation topics. Each carrel has a locked file cabinet. Renters have sole access to the study room and receive keys to the study room door and file cabinet.

*Note: Due to high demand, we regret that study carrels at Bobst Library are not available to NYU Law students or faculty, NYU Medical School students or faculty, NYU Medical Center faculty, NYU dental students or faculty, NYU teaching assistants (unless they are eligible because they have an approved dissertation topic) or users from any Consortium library or members of Friends of Bobst library

Terms & Fees

Rentals are made on a semester basis or for the full academic year. There are a limited number of carrels available, and there is usually a waiting list. To be added to the list, or to rent a carrel, please go to the Library Privileges office on the first floor. Once a carrel has been rented, it may be renewed (one academic year at a time) for up to five years, as long as the renter continues to be a PhD student , an active adjunct or full-time faculty member at NYU. Rental fees are as follows:

  4. No hazardous materials may be stored in the carrel.
  5. Do not store valuable property such as laptops, iPods, etc., anywhere in the carrel. The Library is not responsible for any items kept in the carrel.
  6. Inspections of carrels are conducted regularly by Library staff, who are authorized by the renter to remove materials which violate the study carrel regulations (i.e., non-circulating, uncharged, hazardous or perishable items).
    • A fine of $5.00 per item will be charged to your library record for any food items or inappropriately stored beverage items.
    • Uncharged and non-circulating materials will be removed from the carrel . A fine of $5.00 per item will be charged to your library record.
    • If violations are found on two inspection tours, carrel use privileges will be permanently revoked.
  7. The window to the study carrel may not be covered.
  8. Study carrels changes are granted only in extenuating circumstances (ex. If there is something physically wrong with the carrel).
  9. Study carrels must be renewed or vacated, and all keys returned by their expiration date, the last day of classes. once a locksmith is called, the rental agreement is terminated and a charge of $55.00 for each lock ( a total of $110.00) will be charged to the renters library account.
  10. If a user leaves materials in the carrel past the end of the rental agreement, a $20.00 clear-out fee will be assessed to the user's library account.
